Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), formerly known as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), is a devastating posttraumatic condition characterized by unrelenting severe pain and disability. It is difficult to treat, as the medical community has had a difficult time understanding the cause. Typically, it is treated with high dose steroids, and, in the worst cases, amputation of the affected limb. We understand that it is inflammatory, and generally happens after a traumatic wound. There is a general consensus that the nerves are involved, and new research is suggesting that there may be an auto-immune component as well.
As it happens, hyperbaric oxygen treatments positively affect inflammation, nerve damage, wound healing and immune dysregulation. So, it seems reasonable that hyperbaric oxygen would help with CRPS. Turns out it does. Two new research articles show patients suffering from CRPS have benefited from hyperbaric treatments. Patients are getting relief from the pain, they are able to decrease their steroid dosing, they are even getting back to work. Research shows that hyperbaric oxygen works by decreasing inflammation, helping wounds heal, nourishing nerves, supporting the immune system and increasing blood flow and thus increasing oxygen levels. These are all important components for recovering from CRPS.
