Fibromyalgia is a condition that is still not well understood. Conventional medicine prescribes pain relievers and medications that block nerve conduction. And, these are only partially effective. We’re not sure what causes fibromyalgia or why some people are more prone to it. Patients typically have pain in throughout much of their body, as well as digestive issues and sleep disturbances. Many cannot work and end up on disability.
An Israeli study in 2015 was one of the first to show the benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on fibromyalgia, focusing on the benefit on brain function and sleep. Now a new Spanish research article shows the benefit on acute flares and reduction of pain. We have done quite a bit of research showing that hyperbaric oxygen has anti-inflammatory effects, as well as the brain’s affinity for oxygen. It makes sense that a condition marked by inflammation, pain and decreased brain function would respond well to hyperbaric oxygen treatments.
Our patients with fibromyalgia start to get some energy back within the first 5-10 treatments. Sleep is better and the pain in their muscles begin to decrease as well. Fibromyalgia is a multi-factorial issue and needs multi-discipline treatments, but hyperbaric oxygen is proving to be one of those treatments that can make a big difference.
