Fibromyalgia is a syndrome of unknown etiology that is characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue and disordered sleep, and often associated with neuropsychiatric and cognitive symptoms.
In 2015, a new study out of Israel showed the benefit of hyperbaric oxygen for patients with fibromyalgia. We were all so excited since fibromyalgia is difficult to understand and treat. As I was perusing the research this week, 2 more studies caught my attention.
The first study connected the immune system to fibromyalgia and showed how hyperbaric oxygen helped with their pain, fatigue and sleep. We’ve always assumed there was an immune connection, but this helps to elucidate that. The second study also did SPECT scans on patients brains before and after hyperbaric treatement. The scans showed significant increase in oxygenation, circulation and functionality which led to microchanges in the brain.
We’ve heard for years from our patients how helpful hyperbaric oxygen is. Now we’re finally seeing some scientific evidence. If you have fibromyalgia, please call our office and let us help you start to feel better.
